"Alice," "X-Men: Apocalypse" Underwhelm at Memorial Day Weekend Overseas Box Office

via Comic Book Resources

The holiday weekend didn't help "Alice Through the Looking Glass" and "X-Men: Apocalypse" much at the global box office, as both films fell well under their projections for the extended weekend.

"Alice" came out on top at the overseas box office, earning $62.7 million from 43 different markets in its debut, well below the projection at the start of the weekend of roughly $80 million. The 3D Johnny Depp-led film made the most in China with $26.6 million, followed by Mexico at $4.5 million, Russia with $3.9 million, Brazil at $4.1 million and the UK at $3.1 million.

Also with underwhelming overseas returns was "X-Men: Apocalypse," which raked in $53.2 million, for a combined $183.4 million cume from 83 international markets. The Bryan Singer-directed film came ahead of "Alice" in Brazil with $4.5 million (for a $12.8 million total in the market), the UK with $3.6 million ($17.4 million total), and Australia with $2.2 million ($8.2 million total). The film also earned $14.4 million from Mexico, $11.7 million from Korea, $10.3 million from France and $7.5 million from the Philippines over its three-day haul.

Rounding out the top five overseas, "Warcraft" debuted to $31.7 million for Universal ahead of its North American run. "The Angry Birds Movie" showed staying power in fourth place, earning $29.6 million from 87 territories (for a $155.2 million international total). And in fifth, "Captain America Civil War" continued to rake in cash for Disney/Marvel, earning $13.4 million in its fifth weekend, for an overseas total of $733.1 million and a global cume of $1.106 billion.
