"One-Punch Man" Manga Artist Covers Japanese "Spider-Man" Collection

via Comic Book Resources

When the second volume of Marvel's multiverse-spanning Spider-Man saga "Spider-Verse" launches in Japan, it'll have a brand new look thanks to an exclusive cover by "One-Punch Man manga artist Yusuke Murata.

"Spider-Verse" is a 2014 storyline that ran in Marvel's ongoing "Amazing Spider-Man" comic book series, and featured an interdimensional team consisting of "every Spider-Man ever" battling against familiar Spider-Man villain Morlun. This new collection collects the "Edge of Spider-Verse" spinoff series, which introduced Peni Parker, a mech-riding Japanese Spider-Woman created by "My Chemical Romance' front man Gerard Way, and the fan-favorite character Spider-Gwen, created by Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez.

Murata previously provided a unique cover for Japan's first "Spider-Verse" collection, which contained the main storyline; when the two volumes are placed side-by-side, the two volumes will create a single, epic scene showing many of "Spider-Verse's" heroes in action. As Crunchyroll notes, the "Spider-Verse" covers don't mark the first time Murata has drawn Marvel's iconic web-slinger. In the past, Murata created covers for collections of other Spider-Man storylines, including "Spider-Island" and the "Secret Wars" series "Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows."

"One-Punch Man" was created by a Japanese artist known as ONE, and debuted as a webcomic in 2009, quickly becoming a viral hit. In 2012, Murata contacted ONE and proposed a manga adaptation; Murata's version of "One-Punch Man" premiered later that year on the website "Young Jump Web Comics." The original webcomic, which details the adventures of an employee of City Z's Hero's Association, currently has 107 chapters. An anime adaptation is currently in its second season.
